What a fabulous hotel with character

General information: just stayed for 2 nights and was really pleased that the room complemented the character of the hotel. Loved the creaky floorboards in the room and along the corridor as this showed the character again. The room was perfect for two people and I can honestly say that the comfortable bed was a bonus. The reception staff were friendly and helpful and we had a lovely warm welcome. The restaurant staff were very helpful and the food was well spread between each serving. Cannot fault our experience at staying at this hotel and would definitely stay there again.
Location and surroundings: location was spot on. The hotel is situated just off the high street and slightly offset from Shakespeare's school. Just down the road opposite the hotel was the Royal Shakespeare Theatre. If you plan to visit the 5 houses, then the hop on hop off bus service for Mary Arden farm and Anne Hatherway's cottage was perfect. Earplugs were supplied by the driver and the information talk was very interesting.
    Service: exceptional service
Dining: restaurant menu was limited but only to our likes and dislikes. Breakfast was a full buffet, which was presented very well
Useful tips: cost of parking was £5 per night which was very cheap compared to parking elsewhere in the centre. 24 hour reception was a bonus and the staff were very friendly

We were entertaining friends from Argentina. The location and level of service and comfort were exactly what we required.

    The pillows could be improved.

  • Older travelers
    7.4

Very centrally located, perfect for Shakespeare lovers!

We were on the ground floor and anyone could look in the window, no privacy at all! Not like a top hotel. The barman wasn't very good - inexperienced. He put a whole bottle of orange in with a shot of vodka, but that was a minor thing.

  • Family with children
    7.0

The character, the location, ease of parking.

Non-descript room that might has well have been in the usa, lack of imagination on dining menu, service charge on the use of credit cards for foreign visitors is most unfriendly. Of 9 four or five star hotels that we stayed in this vacation, this hotel was the only one with this policy.

    Breakfast excellent

Poor reception - no facecloth - room phone not working and two days to rectify - awful TV reception. Complained personally to General Manager but no discount offered.

The sheltered garden was wonderful! The real ale in the bar. Great breakfast selection

Lift not working. Staff could not cope with breakfast rush when the hotel was full. No full length mirror in room.

  • Older travelers
    10.0

Excellent location, staff, dining and environment. Although in the centre of Stratford the hotel had a super garden and large car park. We will definitely be staying at this hotel again!

  • Couple

In a good position, close to shops, bars and restaurants. Hotel offers on site parking facilities.

Lift not working. May be difficult for people with poor mobility.

  • Older travelers

Very close to the theatre and so ideal on a theatre break. Two kinds of rooms "olde worlde" and modern so you get choice if you want. Generally well run.

  • Older travelers
    7.0

The private garden for drinks and relaxing. The room divided with entrance area and seperate en-suite allows space and privacy. Clean and modern. Good choice at breakfast.

Bed matress was a bit too hard for husbands bad back and I don't think that at £145 per night there should be an extra charge for cooked breakfast. We travel a lot and have never been asked to pay a surcharge when price is over £100. Also, the cream tea was disappointing for the cost with fake cream, jam in a jar, wrapped butter, and mass produced scones. Not the standard acceptable for this type of hotel.

  • Couple
    8.8

The rooms were comfortable with a lot of character. We stayed in the tudor-style section of the hotel and the floor was slanted so much that items would slide off the desk. The decor was pleasant and the location was perfect for us.

We had difficulty getting Internet connectivity working due to broken ethernet ports in the room. Hotel staff could not offer after-hours (8pm) technical support but did offer to switch us to another room. Fortunately we were eventually able to fix it ourselves after wasting an hour or so and did not have to relocate.

  • Older travelers
    7.8

The room was comfortable and the location was excellent.

I would advise the staff to be put on a customer care course.

  • Older travelers

    good breakfast nice clean room

our room was above reception which had the television on from morning to night at a very loud volume causing a non enjoyable situation and all i got in recompense was a 20pound reduction which only cancelled out amount charged for change of room for one night not a happy bunny

  • Couple

I like the ubication and the facilities. They where excellent.

Was the last hotel after a trip of 15 days and the lifts where no working so we have to carrie all the lugagge up stairs by hand.

  • Group of friends
    5.0

the hotel was very central for all of the tourist sights in the town and convenient for parking etc

the staff were not overly enthusiastic, especially the reception staff.we were allocated a ground floor room,351,in the garden area.this room has no privacy at the bathroom window and you would be subjected to people walking by when using the wc or bath/shower.we were moved to another room on the second floor in the main hotel only to find access to this was via a staircase consisting of 6 flights.the lift was out of oreder and according to one of the staff had been for a few weeks and was not likely to be fixed in the near future.the staircase was in direct sunlight and was like walking into a conservatory on a hot day.this i found was totally unacceptable for a 4 star hotel.
